The Collection
The Collection explores the essential alluring qualities of natural objects that compel us to take them from their native setting and incorporate them into our lives. I seek to illustrate how natural objects can become stimulating objects of human desire, as well as show how natural objects can come to symbolically represent our relationship with the places in which the objects were collected.
I have chosen to showcase objects collected from four general locations, Redwood Creek, the Little Bald Hills, and College Cove in Humboldt County, as well as a collection from my ecological studies in Chilean Patagonia.
Collections of objects can facilitate remembrance of the places in which they were found, and can furthermore cause us to feel various emotions as we reflect on the experiences we had in that place. The objects can symbolically represent the place and give us insight into the physical or biological processes that formed the objects.
I have offered an intimate perspective of the collected objects because I believe this perspective is representative of the close interaction we have when we personally examine objects in nature. This perspective also showcases the complex beauty of the objects and allows for focus on the attractive qualities of each objects’ texture, pattern, form, and color. These are what I believe to be the essential visual features that compel us to gravitate towards natural objects and create the desire to collect.
